Is the New Benefit Corporation Structure Right for You?
This year Florida became “the 25th state to allow a new kind of company which is set up to serve a public purpose” called a Benefit Corporation. Could the benefit corporation structure be right for your business? As a benefit corporation, you would join over 800 companies that have already adopted the structure across the country, including leaders like King Arthur Flour, Patagonia, Method and Plum.
Conscious Capitalism Florida along with the University of Tampa’s Entrepreneurs Sustainability Board, Florida Next, the US Green Chamber, the Florida Bar Association, and B Lab the nonprofit behind the Benefit Corporation movement are partnering to host a free education seminar on October 8, 2014 from 3 to 6 p.m. at The University of Tampa for the community to learn about the benefits of becoming a Benefit Corporation.
This free event will feature Jef Conley and Elena Gibson of Sequil Systems of Delray Beach, an environmental consulting firm, that recently became one of Florida’s first Benefit Corporations. Also speaking will be attorney Gary Teblum of Trenam Kemker, who helped draft Florida’s legislation and Vinny Tafuro of Conscious Capitalism Florida.
Topics Covered:
- Whether it makes sense for your business,
- How to elect it,
- How the structure differs from conventional corporations, and general nuts and bolts.
