The Operating System for Better Business
Conscious capitalism is a practical framework for building stronger businesses.
It helps leaders create lasting value for customers, employees, suppliers, investors and communities—while delivering stronger long-term performance.
Rather than treating purpose and profit as competing priorities, conscious capitalism recognizes that they reinforce one another.
What if business started with a different question?
Traditional business thinking often begins with one question:
How do we maximize profit?
We begin where it matters:
How do we create lasting value?
When organizations create value for everyone connected to the business—not just shareholders—they build stronger cultures, earn deeper trust, make better decisions and become more resilient over the long term.
The Four Tenets
The four tenets of conscious capitalism work together to shape how organizations think, lead and grow.
1. Higher Purpose
Profit sustains a business. Purpose gives it direction.
A clear purpose inspires people, guides decisions and creates value that extends beyond financial returns.
2. Stakeholder Orientation
Businesses operate within an interconnected ecosystem.
Rather than creating value for one stakeholder at the expense of another, conscious businesses seek outcomes that strengthen customers, employees, suppliers, investors and communities alike.
Long-term success depends on the health of the whole system.
3. Conscious Leadership
Leadership shapes every organization.
Conscious leaders understand that trust, integrity, emotional intelligence and long-term thinking aren’t soft skills—they’re competitive advantages that influence culture, innovation and performance.
4. Conscious Culture
Culture is where purpose becomes practice.
It shapes behaviors, relationships and everyday decisions, creating organizations where people perform at their best, are emotionally invested and feel valued, while businesses thrive and evolve.
Why it works
Better business is measurable.
Conscious capitalism isn’t just a philosophy. It’s supported by decades of evidence.
Research published in Firms of Endearment found that companies committed to purpose, stakeholder orientation and values significantly outperformed the S&P 500 over a 15-year period. More recent research continues to point in the same direction: organizations with a clear purpose achieve 19% higher employee retention, while businesses built around conscious capitalism principles have been shown to outperform the S&P 500 by more than 10x over the long term.
At the same time, the cost of getting leadership wrong is rising. Only 31% of U.S. employees are engaged at work, the lowest level in a decade, while Gallup estimates disengagement costs the global economy US$10 trillion every year.
Creating value for stakeholders doesn’t come at the expense of commercial success.
Increasingly, it’s becoming one of the strongest predictors of it.
